Outline for Literary Essay
1. Intro:
- Lead: The story of Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famed plays written by the acclaimed William Shakespeare. Over many years this piece has influenced many pieces of modern literature.
- Title and Author: brief context or background: William Shakespeare was a famous play write from 1500’s, well known for writing Hamlet, A Mid-summers Night Dream, and of course Romeo and Juliet.
- Thesis/focus (overall interpretation): The relationship between Romeo and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (R&J) is similar to the relationship between Peeta and Katniss in the Hunger Games.
2.Body:
- Paragraph 1 (observation/inference):
Topic sentence: There is a conflict surrounding Romeo and Juliet’s love in the book R&J.
Quotation: 2.2.2-5 “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.”
This quote shows: This quote shows that Juliet is in love with Romeo, but feels that she can’t love him because she is a Capulet and he a Montague, she wishes she could marry him and no longer be a Capulet so they could be together.
- Paragraph 2 (observation/inference):
Topic sentence: In the relationship between Katniss and Peeta from the Hunger Games there is also a problem.
Quotation: from the berries scene, only one can survive, “ one one of the tributes from the remaining team can be the winner”
This quote shows: This quote shows that between Katniss and Peeta only one of them can live, so their love is doomed.
c. Paragraph 3 (observation/inference):
Topic sentence: The conflicts in the relationships between Peeta and Katniss and Romeo and Juliet are really similar because there is something keeping them apart.
Quotation: In both of these two books the couples are described as star crossed lovers.
This quote shows: This quote shows that there is something preventing the couples from being together, it shows that the two couples relationships are very must the same because they are described under the same term.
- Conclusion:
a. How does the text relate to you the world or another text: In conclusion the relationships are very similar in both books, I think that the relationship between Katniss and Peeta is probably inspired by R&J the book.
b. What do you think the reader should think know and feel about your topic: I think that the reader should realize that Shakespeare’s writing has really inspired other authors all over the world and that good books can really change the way people write.
