What are the main similarities and difference between childhood and adulthood?

 I think that overall there are a lot of similarities and differences between being a child and being an adult. These have a big effect on how people function in the world.

I think a lot of this revolves around the fact that adults take on a lot more responsibilities then kids do. In general, kids get to lean on adults for both support and guidance in their actions. As an adult you are for the most part on your own. A kid can make a mistake but get out of it because of their age. As you grow older you become more and more responsible for the things you do. I think that one of the major differences between a child and an adult is the ability to make a decision that was a long term affects on you. In coming of age you become more responsible for making decisions. For example in middle school kids got to pick and try out for high schools. I think for many this is a big land mark in coming of age because they are choosing something that can effect them in the long run. They are not totally alone in this decision because they still have the help of their parents and guidance councilors. As an adult you are expected to take steps that are important for your life on your own with out the help of others. 

I think that another main difference between childhood and adulthood is the physical appearance and puberty. Going through puberty the body of a child changes to one of an adult, this is a big part of how a person is regarded in the world. While looking more womanly doesn’t make someone a woman is changes how people act towards you. I think as peoples bodies change they become exposed to more aspects of society. In general things become more sexualized for teens even though they are not grown up yet. I think that contributes to the fact that a lot of kids are growing up quickly. Also, changing appearance affects your feeling for other people which affects how you interact with people on another level. I think that part of growing up and becoming an adult is falling in love and taking on a more serious relationship. Overall, I think in some ways this is affected by how you look.

One big difference between kids and adults is that as an adult you are exposed to a lot more and shielded less, parents often form a barrier in attempt to hide their kids from things that are hard or difficult to understand. As and adult people expect you to be able to deal with more and you have to deal with things on your own with out others to protect you. When there is a killer in the neighborhood parents aren’t running to their kids telling them about it and how they should deal with it. Adults have the burden of making sure nothing happens to them selves and the people around them. Also being a child is more carefree, worrying only about what to play, while adults have to provide for themselves. Adults have more burdens on this level too.

I think there also some similarities between childhood and adulthood. One of these is that both children and adults have to deal with relationships. Kids 

can love just as much as adults even if its a different kind of love. Also, both kids and adults go through loss when they loose someone they love. People have different ways of expressing it but a person’s age doesn’t stop them from mourning. Kids also have friendships just as adults do that are really important to them. They both do activities with their friends hang out and share secrets. Friendship is universal and everyone can have friends.

Another similarity between being an adult and a kid is that they can both learn. I think that there is no point at which you can stop learning. No one knows everything and their is always things that you don’t know. Learning is both important to kids and adults because it changes the way they both live their lives. Learning really helps people accept each other and get along better in the world. I think that as an adult learning about certain things can go into more depth but children learn so much just from the world around them with out even trying.

In conclusion, there are a lot of similarities and differences between being an adult and a child. For one an adult makes more decisions for themselves while kids don't have to worry about that as much. While both kids and adults learn things everyday and function in important relationships. In the end there are a few things that separate a child from an adult but that doesn’t mean they aren’t very much the same in other ways.

 The story of Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famed plays written by the acclaimed William Shakespeare. Over many years this piece has influenced many pieces of modern literature. One very famous series that R&J inspired was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. R&J tells a 1500’s story of two young people who fall in love that are from apposing houses, while The Hunger Games tells a fantasy story of children forced to fight to the death in an arena. While these stories seem extremely different, the story The Hunger Games seems to have been inspired by the classic Romeo and Juliet because of the character relationships.

 In R&J  there is a unique relationship between Juliet and Romeo. While Juliet is a Capulet, Romeo is a Montague, these two houses are opposing making their relationship impossible. One example of this from the text it “My only love sprung from my only hate!/Too early seen unknown, and known too late!/Prodigious birth of love it is to me,/That I must love a loathed enemy.” (Shakespeare 1.4.144-147). These lines are said my Romeo about Juliet when he realizes that she is a Capulet. He is saying that its to late to stop the love he has formed with Juliet who is his enemy. This part of the play is really important because it shows that Romeo and Juliet aren’t supposed to be together. In the end these lines foreshadow what the relationship between Juliet and Romeo will be like. Overall, it also leads to drama later on in the story.

 In The Hunger Games the general public view Katniss and Peeta to be in a relationship that can’t work out. Their relationship can be observed from lots of different angles. The people watching the hunger games on tv believe that Katniss and Peeta are in love, but from the readers point of view it is shown that Katniss may be using their love as a survival tactic. This is shown by the line “One kiss equals one pot of broth”(Collins 261). This line shows that Katniss has ulterior motives, and actually may not be in love with Peeta to begin with. Over time these character’s love strengthens, I think that as time goes by Katniss learns to care for Peeta, loving him so much she will die for him. Overall, these multiple layers of the book create a very interesting relationship between Katniss and Peeta. Through one lens they are two teenagers desperately in love, through another people who care for each other looking to survive. While in the beginning of their relationship it might not be clear, in the end it is obvious that whether it be true love, or love of friends, Katniss and Peeta end up being star crossed lovers.

In R&J the term of star crossed lovers is used in the prologue foreshadowing that Romeo and Juliet won’t be able to be together. I think the term "star crossed lovers" really has be come a universal term since it was first used in Romeo and Juliet. Its interesting that one idea used so long ago can show up in more modern literature. Overall, I think it shows that the two couples relationships are very much the same because they are described under the same term.

I think that the reader should realize that Shakespeare’s writing has really inspired other authors all over the world and that good books can really change the way people write. For all we know the next big hit might have been inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

3. Thesis/focus (overall interpretation): The relationship between Romeo and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (R&J) is similar to the relationship between Peeta and Katniss in the Hunger Games.

2.Body:

1. Paragraph 1 (observation/inference):

Topic sentence: There is a conflict surrounding Romeo and Juliet’s love in the  book R&J.

Quotation: 2.2.2-5 “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?

Deny thy father and refuse thy name;

Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,

And I'll no longer be a Capulet.”

This quote shows: This quote shows that Juliet is in love with Romeo, but feels that she can’t love him because she is a Capulet and he a Montague, she wishes she could marry him and no longer be a Capulet so they could be together.

b. What do you think the reader should think know and feel about your topic: I think that the reader should realize that Shakespeare’s writing has really inspired other authors all over the world and that good books can really change the way people write.

         The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne is one of the most emotionally challenging books for me to read. It tells the story of a boy who's father runs Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp. The book really captures the innocence of a child in this world of complete horror and disgust. I think the thing that makes the book so touching is how unaware Bruno is of whats going on around him.

          I think one way that Bruno exhibits this innocence is the way that Bruno thinks of certain words. In his point of view Auschwitz is "Out-With". This alone shows how oblivious and young he is. I actually read through the entire book with out realizing that he was actually talking about Auschwitz. I became really emotional while reading this book. I have been to Yad Vashem, and it just makes me feel so much more connected to the events that take place in it that ever before.

          Bruno also shows his lack of understanding in other ways. Another example of Bruno's innocence is that he ventures to the fence into the camp without fear at all and talks with a boy who is in the camp. This also really shows that Bruno doesn't know that bad things happen in the camp. Bruno goes farther when he actually goes into the camp with his new found friend. This is one of the most devastating parts of the book, because the reader knows the consequences of him doing this while he has no ideas. At this point of the book, I started to tear up because it really shows how helpless children were murdered with out a second glance. Even the son of the guy who runs the camp can be mixed among the others and exterminated like an insect. It is really sickening to think that this really did happen.

           In the end, Bruno and his friend in the striped pajamas are sent to the gas chambers. The book really shows the innocence of the children so unjustly killed. This book really makes me think about the world we live in and pray to god we can help any child from being murdered like this.

                   The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore is a book in the series I Am Number Four. In this book all of the Garde are finding each other, and finally become the army that they are destined to be. The story deals with a lot of relationships between members of the Garde, and with humans. I think that one big issue that appears in this book is love, and whats really love, and if its okay to be in love with more then one person.

                 Out of all the Garde, I think that Four is the one that has most issues surrounding true love and loving multiple people. One example of this is with Sarah and Six. Four feels that he's in love with Sarah, but then is physically attracted to Six. He hates himself for being untrue to Sarah, and feeling attracted to another girl. I think that it's okay to be attracted to other people because thats how people are, but true love is a different thing. In the book Four's feeling of love is unspeakable devotion, attraction, and passion for Sarah, while for Six he wants to make out with her. I think that Four needs to realize that thinking other people are attractive doesn't make him any less in love with Sarah. I think that  you can't help what you feel with things like that, and it's fine unless you act on it.

             Another time problems with love show up is with Marina and Eight. Marina's problem is her jealousy. She really likes Eight, and every time she sees Eight and Six fooling around she gets upset. I think that a problem she has is that she makes to much of little things between guys and girls. I think this is really true today also. I think that she needs to relax, especially because she and Eight aren't even in a real relationship at that point. I do think that they are going to be a couple though after she kisses him.

               All in all, love is one of the biggest reoccurring topics through out the books. I think it's really interesting to see all the characters relationships grow. I think that one of the messages of the book is to teach lessons about love and problems that come along. I think all these things are really related to real life, and can't wait to see how the story unfolds.

                      The article "Cross-Breed to Avoid Inbreeding" by James Serpell is about  talks about how selective breeding in show dogs can lead interbreeding which may result in deformities. It explains that in order to be considered “pure bred” a dog must have two pure bred parents. In order to keep the breed line pure, many show dog owners use selective breeding. The problem with this is that there are so few dogs that are pure bred, that many dogs are accidentally interbred. This means that two dogs of close relation are bred, creating mutation, which can lead to deformities  in the offspring. Another problem with the AKC standards for breeds is that they lead people to look for dogs with deformed faces just so that they can fit the breeding standards. 

                     One example of deformities these dogs could suffer from is "defects ranging from anatomical problems, like hip dysplasia, that cause chronic suffering, to impaired immune function and loss of resistance to fatal diseases like cancer"(Serpell 1). I don't think its worth having these pure bred dogs when they are at risk of this much. An example of how the AKC absurd standards  is, "As written, this description seems to require breeders to select for the shortest and most deformed face and muzzle possible, and for show judges to award their highest accolades to the dogs that best exemplify this trend"(Serpell 1). This just shows how people are being pushed to have dogs that are at high health risks because of their appearance. I think that its not really that important to have a “pure bred” dog if it is going to be detrimental to its health. I think that in the case a good answer to the problem might be cloning. This would create identical dogs to the standards, but not risk the mutations of interbreeding. I think the breed standards are gross, and people should make sure their dog is healthy rather then look a certain way. 

                  All in all, I think that people need to find another answer for pure bred dogs besides selective breeding.
